Review of "Serpent and Dove" by Shelby Mahurin

I picked up this book due to the vast recommendations from friends, plus its advertisements kept popping up in my feed.

Even Sarah J. Maas says, "A brilliant debut, full of everything I love: a sparkling and fully realized heroine, an intricate and deadly system of magic, and a searing romance that kept me reading long into the night. Serpent & Dove is an absolute gem of a book."

I personally have a lot of issues with this book. Anyone who is an avid reader will recognize the signs immediately. Repetitive phrases (smile and laugh being the worst offenders), lack of character believability, lack of situation believability. The entire book resonates an amateurish fan fiction vibe, complete with grammar issues and spelling errors.

What are some things the author did well? The plot twists were decent. However, I can't go into this without giving too much away, but one of the ending plot twists was a major eye roll.

It was extremely difficult to finish reading the book, but I managed it. This book received three stars because I was able to complete it and it has potential should the author choose to improve upon it. At this time, I will not continue reading the series.
